There had been, in short, surprises.
But a vow is a vow to be chastised
and practical. It says Maria is a poison,
Ayşenür a twist of flesh, a rainbow
to be forgotten. So he goes
to the Street of Crows,
writes his name on abandoned
bricks, and waits for the bus
that will take him up the hill
past the women pawning icons—
pink and yellow—in the sun.
