PICK-UP TRUCKS -

PASSENGER REGISTRATION WEIGHT LIMIT INCREASES

DMV has published regulations that will increase the weight limit from 5,500 pounds to 6,000 pounds for

customers to receive passenger registrations. Pick-up trucks may be registered as a passenger vehicle, at the

customer’s option, if it now meets the following criteria:

Unladen weight of 6,000 pounds or less and

exclusively used for non-commercial purposes and

no business advertising.

The rule will also apply to leased or rented pick-up trucks as long as the customer certifies that such truck will be

used only for non-commercial purposes.

The trend to use pick-up trucks as “family” vehicles continues to increase throughout the state. Added options

sometimes raised the weight too much for customers to receive a passenger registration and commercial plates

kept these vehicles off the State’s parkways.
