Dealer Plates

Last year, a New York City dealer received a summons for driving his demo, for personal use, while driving on

Northern State Parkway on Long Island. The police officer issued a citation for “misuse”of a dealer plate.

GNYADA assisted the dealer by providingmemos the Department of MotorVehicles had issued to state- wide police

precincts, a copy of regulations regarding dealer plate use, and a copy of a court decision upholding personal use of

dealer plates. The dealer was determined to go fight this issue in court.

At the trial the police officer testified, incorrectly, that “The law states that dealers are not supposed to use dealer

plates for personal use.” The dealer testified that he was on his way to Hofstra University on personal business,

then presented the dealer plate regulations to the judge. He informed the judge that “Nowhere in this reg does it

prohibit dealers from using dealer plates for personal use.”The judge reviewed the regulations and dismissed the

case against the dealership.

When the dealer was asked why he insisted on going to trial he replied, “NO LAWSWERE BROKEN.”

DMV recently issued an Official Dealer Plate Notice describing proper use of dealer plates. GNYADA has available

new convenient window clings for dealer demos. These clings can be placed on the windshield where the police

typically look for registration and inspections stickers.

Order your Official Dealer Plate Notices from GNYADA for $20 for a set of 25 windshield clings.
