Symposium

PROTONS ORHEAVY IONS?

10:45 - 11:45 | ROOM 2

Proton beam therapy is developing rapidly, although clinical evidence is still sparse and its cost-effec-

tiveness is still unclear. Radiotherapy with heavier ions is an even more complex technology but may

offer additional clinical benefits. This symposium focuses on the scientific basis of these modalities and

discusses potential advantages of protons vs. heavier particles. The session will present first the physi-

cal characteristics of the various ion types and relevant differences for radiotherapy. Then radiobiol-

ogy will be discussed, including a critical discussion of RBE models and the role of preclinical studies.

Finally, the clinical evidence for ion beams will be summarised discussing esp. the question of feasibility

and necessity of randomised clinical trials.
