"A s long as th ere seem ed to be a n y chance
o f M ary being resto red to p ow er in S c o tla n d , it
a p p ea rs certain th a t F red erik w as fully determ ined
no t to d eliver up B o th w e ll, and even to tre a t him
like a prince.
B u t alth o u g h F re d e rik lay u n d e r
som e obligations to Q ueen M a r y , in as m uch as
she h ad p erm itted him to levy tro o p s in S cotland
for his la te w a rs in S w e d e n , y e t he w ould no t by
a n y p ositive a ct in terfere for h e r re sto ra tio n , lest,
by so d o in g , he sho uld be re g ard e d as u n faith fu l
to the P ro te sta n t cause, w hich w ould in those days
ha v e been such a stigm a on h is reign an d m em ory
as w ould be view ed w ith ab h o rren ce b y every
P ro te sta n t prince. Y et, could M ary be resto red by
som e other ag en c y , he h a d th en only to su rren d er
to th e Q ueen h er husband, an d receive th e isles o f
O rkney an d S hetlan d in retu rn .
