SPONSORS, STATE
DEPARTMENT TO
APPROVE AND
OVERSEE
The Ohio Department of Education does not oversee community
schools. Instead, it is responsible for approval and oversight of the
sponsors of these community schools.
If the entity (seeking to sponsor) operates or sponsors other community
schools outside Ohio, at least one of those schools must have a
designation equivalent to continuous improvement or better.
In addition, the department is required to issue by December 31 of each
year a report regarding the effectiveness of academic programs,
operations, and legal compliance and of the financial condition of all
community schools.
Digital schools in operation on May 1, 2005 are permitted to continue
operation even if a new sponsor is secured. After January 1, 2013, up
to five digital schools per year may be approved to open, but they be
able to demonstrate experience and quality.
Digital schools were required to comply with standards adopted by the
International Association for K-12 Online Learning by January 1, 2013
(new schools) or July 1, 2013 (existing schools).
