problems arising from conflicts of

law and of

practice".

As you know, because I have already written to

you generally on this subject, the International

Bar Association is very anxious indeed to ensure

that it can give the maximum help to its Law

Society and Bar Association members and to the

profession in each country collectively and in

dividually in their problems.

The Committee which is considering the sub

ject mentioned above is concerned primarily to

see that at Conferences of the International Bar

Association we consider subjects which are of

practical interest and importance to the practising

lawyers of the world. They therefore would very

much like to know from your Association what

you think could be discussed with a view to

simplifying the work of the ordinary practising

lawyer. If I may give one or two examples of the

kind of subject which the Council have in mind,

I would mention the reciprocal enforcement of

kdgments, the proving of wills in foreign coun

tries and the problems arising from marriage and

divorce of foreign nationals.

Probably the majority of practising lawyers in

the course of their professional life are faced with

the position where they have to take some action

on behalf of a client in respect of a foreign

country and anything that can be done to simplify

their task in this respect the I.B.A. would like to

achieve.

Would you be kind enough to let us have your

thoughts on the subjects which we might well ex

plore sending your reply to Mr. W. A. Cook, the

President of The Law Society of Scotland at 105

West George Street, Glasgow, C.2., Scotland, who

has undertaken the task of analysing the replies

and preparing a report for the Council at their

next meeting in July, in conjunction with Mr.

John Carrigan, Chairman of the Committee on

Topics of the International Bar Association, of

Glengarriff, Thurles, Co. Tipperary, Ireland. If

at the same time you would be kind enough to

send a copy of your letter to Mr. G. J. McMahon,

the Secretary-General of the I.B.A. of 501 Fifth

Avenue, New York 10017

this would be most

helpful. All this

please

before the 1st May 1968.

Yours very truly,

Sir Thomas Lund

Treasurer,

The Law Society's Hall,

Chancery Lane,

London, W.C.2, England.
