then the number of persons entering into inden

tures of apprenticeship has shown a sharp increase.

In recent years it has risen from about thirty-five

to over one hundred each year.

A memorandum

entitled

"The Professional

Work of a Solicitor" has been supplied by the

Society to the Department of Labour and will

be circulated to all schools later this year.

Yours faithfully,

Eric A. Plunkett.

Secretary.

LECTURES, ARTICLES, RADIO AND

TELEVISION BROADCASTS

SOLICITORS

The current edition of the Members' Handbook

lays down the current practice and interpretation

by the Council of Clause 5 of the Solicitors Act,

1954 (Professional Practice, Conduct and Discip

line), Regulations

1955,

in

its

application

to

publications by solicitors and in particular to radio

and television broadcasts. The Council on a report

from a committee have recently reviewed

this

matter and having regard to present day conditions

and the climate of professional opinion and the

practice of other professional bodies they have

decided to adopt a more liberal interpretation. It

is emphasised that the well-established prohibition

against any activity on the part of a solicitor for

the purpose of self-advertisement and the attraction

of business is unaltered. There are, however, cases

in which it is in the interests of the profession, and

indeed in the public interest, that solicitors who

are specially competent to discuss matters of legal

and public interest should not be unduly restricted.

It is hoped to circulate shortly an amendment to

the current ruling DR 34 printed at page 248

of the Members' Handbook. This ruling should

be interleaved in the Handbook.
