The main reason why the Liaison Committee
was formed was to establish relations between
Solicitor's Apprentices and the Council of the
Incorporated Law Society. The first meeting with
representatives of the Council took place on 27th
February, 1969, the Council was represented by
the President and Vice-President, the Secretary
was also present. This first meeting was primarily
an exploratory one at which the Liaison Commit
tee
put
forward
the general
views
of
the
Apprentices on matters ranging from the suit
ability of some lectures to the future development
of King's Hospital. The Committee were reassured
by the members present that they will be fully
consulted by
the Council on the adaptation of
King's Hospital, and on the facilities to be provided
for apprentices in general. The Committee is also
to be consulted when changes are to be made in
the educational system for apprentices.
Up to the 5th May the Committee has had nine
committee meetings and two meetings with the
representatives of the Council.
The establishment of the Liaison Committee is
one of the most significant moves to be taken by
the Council for a number of years. For too long
apprentices have been
inflicted with changes,
which have been made without consultation. Now
through the Committee the apprentices may be
consulted and their views sought before decisions
are taken which will ultimately affect them. One
field in which the Committee will take an active
part will be the reform of the present educational
system for intending solicitors. Already the first
tentative steps are being taken by the Council in
this direction. The Council may rest assured that
they will have
the fullest co-operation of
the
Liaison Committee and
the general body of
apprentices in
implementing the changes when
they do come.
