Employment of Newly-Qualified Solicitors

A matter which has

been

occupying

the

attention of the Liaison Committee is the difficulty

which newly qualified solicitors have in finding

suitable jobs. Now and then one hears of a newly

qualified solicitor being paid less than £10 a week.

Also many young solicitors find theselves doing

dead-end

jobs,

such as debt collections. The

attitude of some solicitors (they come in a minor

ity) can best be summed up in an item which

appeared in the Gazette for March 1968, under

the heading "Position Vacant". The substance of

the article was that the newly qualified solicitor

would be paid "pre-war wages" and should never

be offered "helpful criticism on a matter of real

importance". It cannot be denied that any solicitor

who adopts this attitude is failing in his duty to

the profession and the public as a whole.

The view expressed by

the President, Mr.

Noonan, when presenting the parchments on June

13th 1968 is to be commended. On that occasion

he said that "the best experience" is to be had in

a practice "where the whole field of practice is

covered, and the assistant always gets a wide scope

of personal responsibility". With a view to ensuring

that the newly qualified solicitor would get such

experience the Liaison Committee submitted to the

Court of Examiners

a memorandum on

an

Appointments Register. It is suggested in the mem

orandum that any solicitor (whether newly quali

fied or not) seeking a position could enter his name

on the Register. Similarly any firm with a position

vacant could enter particulars of it in the Register.

It was recommended that the Register should not

be confined to firms of solicitors with positions to

offer but should also be open

to offers from

Departments of State, Semi-State bodies, and the

commercial world. It is the feeling of the appren

tices and the Liaison Committee that when these

proposals are put into effect by the Incorporate^

Law Society the scope of employment open tp ;

newly qualified solicitor would be made clear t(j>

him and he would have a greater chance of acquir-'

ing the "best experience".

The Liaison Committee would be interested in

receiving any suggestions from the general body of

practising solicitors regarding the Appointments

Register, or any other suggestions which they mair

come to make and would like to thank those who,

have already made suggestions.
