ORDINARY GENERAL MEETING
An Ordinary General Meeting was held
in The
Library, Solicitors Buildings, Four Courts, Dublin, on
Thursday, 14th May, 1970. The President took the chair
at 2.30 p.m.
The notice convening the meeting was by permission
taken as read. The Secretary read the minutes of the
Annual General Meeting held on 20th November. 1969
which were confirmed and signed by the President.'
The
following members
of
the
Society were
unanimously appointed as the scrutineers of the ballot
for the election of the Council for the year 1970/71—
Messrs. Alexander
J. McDonald, Thomas
Jackson,
Brendan
P.
McCormick,
Roderick
J.
Tierney,
Laurence J. Branigan.
The President then addressed the meeting as follows:—
Ladies and Gentlemen,
It is my duty and privilege in accordance with custom
to tell you something about the work of the Council
during the five months or so since our election and
about any general development affecting the Society
and profession. The day after my predecessor addressed
you last November the Minister introduced the estimate
for the Department of Justice in Dail Eireann. He spoke
in
particular
about
the Department's
long
term
programme of Law Reform. This programme
is of
course of vital interest to us and I want to say again
what I have already said publicly that we appreciate
very much the opportunities which we now often get
to comment on the Minister's proposals for legislation
and make our own proposals. There have in the past
been instances of
legislation being introduced which
vitally
affected our profession
and had
not been
considered at all from the point of view of the practical
lawyer. We are particularly interested in the proposals
in regard to the jurisdiction of the District and Circuit
Courts and we support the Minister's suggestion that
Solicitors should be entitled
to be appointed
to
the
Circuit Court Bench.
Wehave submitted
to
the Committee on Court
P-r.cf'ro r-i'l Procedure the Council's views on voluntary
