scription of the field in a compact and readable
form. The majority of statutory references are
made to the Tax Management Act, 1970, which
reduces this book's relevance to the Irish prac

The Law of Insurance.
Third
Edition, 8vo. Pp. 379. London, Sweet and
Maxwell, 1970.
This book, the successor of Porter's Laws of
Insurance, was originally published as Preston
and Colinvaux in 1950, and thus three editions
have been published in twenty years. The chapter
headings are broadly the same as those of the
1950 edition, though many sub-headings have
been added. The present edition also contains a
Table of Cases, a Table of Statutes, and an
appendix containing the principal statutes relating
to Insurance; despite this, the author has suc
ceeded in cutting down the text from 498 pages in
1950 to 379 pages in 1970 — a remarkable feat.
In the present edition, the subject matter has
been conveniently divided into sub-headings
{headed paragraphs), and references made in the
paragraphs to the relevant cases. Apart from
dealing with the broad principles of insurance
law, Part III deals with special types of insurance,
such as life, accident, fire, motor vehicles and
guarantee. This short and lucid work will be
most useful to the practitioner who wishes to
grasp clearly and succinctly the principles of insur
ance law.

The Lawyers Companion and Diary,
1971, edited
by Stevens Editorial Staff, London, Stevens, 1970.
This is the 125th Year of Publication of this
most useful work. The Diary for 1971 contains
two pages per week, and there is ample space in
each entry. Apart from that, there is a complete
list of barristers and solicitors practising in Eng
land and Wales covering 1372 pages, as well as
such helpful material as postal charges, costs for
conveyancing and for registration of title and
probate as well as high court fees in England.
It need hardly be said that the volume contains
almost as much information as the Law List, in
addition to being a most useful diary. Highly
recommended.

Dymond's Death Duties.
Finance Act 1969 Supple
ment to 14th Edition, by Reginald K. Johns,
LL.B., London The Solicitors Law Stationary
Society Ltd. Pp. 343. Price £3-15-0.
This supplement to the 14th Edition of the
standard work on Death Duties replaces the text
of the main volume in Chapters V-VIII (Pp. 98 -
256) as respects deaths after the 16th April, 1969,
and pp. 9 - 65 of the Third Supplement, except
so far as the latter are specifically referred to.
Furthermore, an exception to the non-culmative
nature of the supplement is that the amendments
to the text of the statutes at pp. 298 - 309 are
cumulative with and supercede those at pp. 232 -
235 of the Third Supplement.
The supplement is mainly concerned with the
extensive changes in Estate Duty in England as
regards deaths after 15th April, 1969, brought
about by the Finance Act, 1969. Six pages are
given a preliminary summary of the main relevant
provisions in the detailed and thorough manner
expected of this book. The supplement states the
law as at the 1st August, 1970 and includes a dis
cussion of three valuation cases and decisions in
matrimonial proceedings as to the beneficial in
terests of spouses in matrimonial homes, in view
of the indirect importance of that question to
Estate Duty liability.

Law Students are well acquainted with the
Nutshell Series which is particularly useful to
them for final revision before their examinations.
This volume in the series mentions the latest
