he paid the colossal sum in those days of one million francs
(about £40,000) for the English Derby winner " Flying Fox
The formation of the Societe d'Encouragement in Nov. 1833
led to the creation of the Jockey Club, the Stud Book, and later
the classical races : the Prix d'Essai des Poulains in 1841, des
Pouliches in 1841, the Prixde Diane inl 843, the Prix du jockey
Club in 1836, the Grand Prix de Paris in 1863. The Prix du
Jockey Club or French Derby was first run at Chantilly, and
was won by a horse named " Frank" owned by Lord Henry
Seymour, the famous dandy, known In history as " Milord
TArsouille ". To the five classic races mentioned above the
Prix de I'Arc de Triomphe was added in 1920.
Auteuil (Paris), the most beautifully laid out steeplechase
course, exists since 1873. The best known of the many events
run there are the Grand Steeple-Chase (6,500 metres), the
Grande Course de Hales and the Prix des Drags, which are
run respectively on Sunday, Wednesday and Friday of the
Grande Semaine at the end of June.
The Importation of a thoroughbred into America dates back
to 1730 and the first races were held in South Carolina in 1734.
A genealogical register, " Stud Book," for the keeping of records,
became an established custom as early as 1829.
Horse races are popular In most States. The principal events,
like the Kentucky Derby and Oaks, are run in Louisville, Ky.
The Belmont Stakes, the Futurity, the Withers, the Lawrence
Realisation, the Swift, the National Stallion, the Champagne
and the Ladies' Handicap are held at Belmont Park.
