Colour aside, it’s stressful enough doing
a renovation or a new build without
worrying if your new floor is going to
work. You would never consider buying a
sports car if you needed a family car and
it’s the same with different types of floor
covering. Sure we all like the idea of high-
gloss rich-timber look, but the reality is you
might not actually live in a show room.
Start by asking yourself who is responsible
for keeping the floor clean? The higher the
gloss the easier it will be to see scratches
and dust, so the more often you will need
to run a dust mop over the floor. If you have
less time to worry about keeping the floors
dust free then consider a matt finish or even
a quality laminate which is far more resistant
to scratching than a varnish. Part of reducing
the scratches to your new floor is keeping it
grit free. Dust and then damp mop with a PH
neutral detergent if it needs it. Each type of
floor has its own pros and cons.
Try the following check list to
determine the right floor for your
project:
1. Do you live near the beach, have children
that bring sand in on their feet or have a
medium or large dog in the house? (consider
laminate)
2. Are you on a tight budget, renovating to sell
or renting the place? (consider laminate)
3. Do you want a gloss finish? (Consider
Bamboo or Timber)
4. Do you have environmental concerns?
(Consider Bamboo or Cork)
5. Do you prefer lots of features, knots and
swirls? (Consider Timber or Laminate)
6. Is sound a major consideration? (Consider
Cork or acoustic underlay)
7. Is it a big open area to cover? (Wide planks
such as Oak will work well)
8. Do you want the floor to make a statement?
(Consider traditional hard wood timber)
Come into the shop to feel and explore
the different options available. You may
be surprised by the technology of modern
floors. Borrow samples to check the colour
is right in the lighting of your property. Note
that brochures and the internet do not give
accurate colour representation.
