ommittee

which had considered the replies

from the bar associations to a circular sent out by

the Secretary, reported that the majority o f the

associations which had replied were in favour of

legislation to increase the jurisdiction o f the District

Court. The Committee reported that the limit of

jurisdiction in cases o f contact should be increased

t0 £j°> in cases o f tort to £25, and in cases of eject

ment for nonpayment o f rent to £53. It was

further reported that legislation should be sought to

enable a decree o f the District Court to be enrolled

for the purposes o f judgment mortgage, garnishee,

and other remedies which are not at present avail

able, owing to the fact that the District Court is not

a court o f record. The report o f the committee

was adopted, and the Secretary was directed to write

to the Department o f Justice.

Purchase o f Property for a Mental Home

A

solicitor

was instructed by a County Manager

to attend at an auction to bid for the purchase of

premises required for a mental hospital. The

authority o f the County Manager to purchase the

premises was derived from Section 51 o f the Mental

Treatment Act, 1945. Section 52 o f the Act in

corporates the provisions of the Lands Clauses

Consolidation Acts. The solicitor attended at the

auction, and bid in accordance with his instructions,

and at negotiations after the auction, purchased the

premises on behalf of the County Manager for

£13,000, paying the deposit out o f his own pocket.
