THIS MONTH at

MUSIC

w

ith the APRA Silver Scroll Awards’

longlist out and nominations closed for

the New Zealand Music Awards, we

thought it would be a good time to remind

ourselves what another great year it has been for

homegrown music.

Although the Silver Scrolls celebrates individual

songs, it’s still a good place to start because

it’s likely that at least some of the albums they

appear on will also end up in contention when the

Tuis nominations roll in.

The APRA shortlist is due to be unveiled this

month but both Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s

Ruban Neilson and SJD – aka James Donnelly

– have nabbed two nominations apiece for their

songs on

Multi-Love

and

Saint John Divine

,

respectively.

Producing wizard Joel

Little (Lorde, Broods, etc) is

also in the running this year,

having a hand in three of the

other longlisted songs, while

other nominees include Nadia

Reid, Marlon Williams, Six60

and Anthonie Tonnon, all of

whose new albums are well

worth checking out.

Voted on by the 10,000-

plus APRA members, this

year’s awards will be held on

September 17 at Auckland’s

Vector Arena and it's the 50th

time that the Silver Scrolls

have been presented.

As part of the celebrations,

this year’s ceremony will also

see the presentation of the

‘Lost Scroll’ of 1981, which

was never actually awarded.

It was actually a terrific year

for Kiwi songs as the shortlist

indicates: as well as The

Clean’s fantastic debut single

Tally Ho

, the nominated

songs include The Swingers’

classic

Counting The Beat

(which went to #1 here and in Australia), The

Screaming Mee Mees’

See Me Go

(another

chart-topper here), and Blam

Blam Blam’s much-loved

satirical anthem

There Is No

Depression In New Zealand

.

The New Zealand Music

Awards also celebrates its

50th anniversary this year,

but the nominees won’t be

announced until October.

However, as well as

the aforementioned APRA

nominees, this year has

already seen a host of

excellent new releases from

some of our favourite local

artists – Anika Moa, Don

McGlashan, Gin Wigmore,

The Warratahs, Trinity Roots,

Princess Chelsea, and Cairo

Knife Fight, to name just a

few – so the judges face a

tough job in narrowing things

down to a shortlist.

But in the meantime, if you

have missed out on some

of great new Kiwi albums of

2015, get busy exploring!
