Lasting Memories
uring the many years Dr. Hughes
has been here, he has devel–
oped and cultivated relation–
ships with University of San
Diego students. When recalling a memo–
rable experience, Dr. Hughes said,
" There was a family in which all the chil–
dren had graduated from the University
of San Diego. Because of this, I had got–
ten to know the whole family. After the
last son graduated, we agreed at the
commencement ceremony to keep in
touch. However, the family was not from
San Diego and we knew we wouldn't be
seeing them. My wife and -I went to Ire–
land about a month after graduation
and were visiting the Blarney Castle.
Just as we were about to leave we ran
into the entire family and had a reunion
with them in Ireland."
For twenty years President Hughes
has watched and helped the university
grow, providing a place for students to
take pride In education. He has become
as much a part of the campus as the
students have.
As
perceived, Dr. Hughes Is pictured as a
conservative, enjoyable man that everyone has
come to know.
When
he attended the 1988 Employee Pic–
nic, Dr. Hughes presented Barbara Wagner and
Lois Scheer the Employee
of
the Year " Runner-
up" plaques.
