Conclusion - fractionation

• Awareness of the fractionation sensitivity of tumors

and normal tissues is critical

• Clinical studies and meta-analysis have shown that

moderately accelerated radiotherapy improves loco-

regional control

• Hyperfractionated RT improves loco-regional control

and survival

• Altered fractionation is thus recommended for

primary radiotherapy of head and neck cancer
