Turnkey

production

lines for

pipelines

SCHULER develops turnkey production

lines for large pipes, for pipeline

applications in crude oil, natural gas,

water, petrochemical industry, wind

energy systems and construction

industry.

The company is delivering two spiral

pipe mills to Mexico and Saudi Arabia,

and an existing line in Canada is being

completely modernised.

The mills for Mexico and Saudi Arabia

are offline spiral pipe lines for the

production of large pipes with diameters

from 508 to 2,235mm (20" to 88") and

lengths of 12 to 24.4m. The pipes are

made from high-grade steel (up to X100)

with thicknesses of up to 25.4mm, which

is wound onto coils. This is formed into

a spiral tube and submerged arc welded

to a spiral welded pipe.

The coil preparation stand ensures

short changeover times, a high degree

of safety, and an exact 90° cut at the

beginning of the coil.

Crane transfers are no longer

necessary. At the forming station, all

relevant steps are automated: the

settings are no longer made manually,

but entered directly via the easy-to-use

control panel and then implemented

with the aid of servo motors. The outer

or inner diameter calibration system

ensures

consistently

reproducible

product quality.

With a total length of 450m, the two

pipe plants also feature various devices

to test the large pipes in accordance

with the API standard. This entails the

use of ultrasonic, X-ray and hydrotester

stands.

In cooperation with Swiss company

MaurerMagnetic, Schuler hasdeveloped

a process that can demagnetise large

pipes during production. This prevents

deflection of the arc during welding and

ensures the quality of the welds, enabling

them to withstand the guaranteed

loads.

Schuler provides presses, automation,

dies, process know-how and services

for the metal forming industry and

lightweight vehicle construction. Its

clients include car manufacturers and

their suppliers, as well as companies

in the forging, household equipment,

packaging, energy and electrical

industries.
