Abrasive wheel machinery
Every shop has an abrasive wheel, but without proper training andmaintenance, it can become a hazard.
Work rests on offhand grinding machines must be kept adjusted closely to the wheel with a maximum
opening of 1/8-inch to prevent work from being jammed between the wheel and the rest, which may
result in wheel breakage.
Respiratory Protection
When respirators are necessary or required by the employer, a written
program must be developed with worksite-specific procedures, and be
updated as necessary to reflect changes in workplace conditions affecting
respirator use. A qualified program administrator should be designated by
the employer to oversee the program and conduct evaluations.
Portable Fire Extinguishers
All fire extinguishers should be operational and not be blocked. There
should be monthly maintenance checks and records should be kept of these
inspections. Employees must be provided with an educational training
program on use of the fire extinguisher.
Emergency Action Plan
Dealers with more than 10 employees must have
an Emergency Action Plan (EAP). The purpose
of an EAP is to facilitate and organize employer
and employee actions during workplace
emergencies. An emergency action plan must be
in writing, kept in the workplace, and available to
employees for review.
General Requirements for All Machines
Guards should be affixed to machines where possible and secured elsewhere if not possible.
