CHAPTER IV

(High School)

“Happy Days”

In August of 2006 Keaton began his first year at

Pulaski County High School. He had no apparent

fear as he began his freshman year. As a ninth grade

guidance counselor I had observed the uneasiness in

beginning students, and had tried to encourage and

support them. It was obvious that Keaton was familiar

with the physical buildings of the school and knew

many of the faculty and staff. In the high school his

father was a math teacher and basketball coach, his

mother was the Instructional Technology Resource

Teacher; once again Keaton had a full time aide. His

female aide would be with him all four years and

has continued to correspond with him. For the last

two years she did not need to stay in the classroom

constantly; she often stayed in the pod and checked

on him from time to time. His progress was quite

evident.

His genuine friendliness came as a pleasant surprise

to us. He enjoyed being around other students and

would have been on a first name basis with his

teachers, something his parents could not allow. We

are astounded by his ability to remember details,

names, faces, dates and family connections. If Keaton
