Spain prevailed to win the 2010 FIFA World Cup after
defeating Netherlands 1-0 on an Andres Iniesta’s goal in the
116th-minute of overtime.
The 84,590 in attendance at Soccer City Stadium watched the
suspense drama unfold as Spain proved to be the better team
on the day and deserving of its first ever FIFA World Cup.
Netherlands and their fans were left to ponder what might have
been had Arjen Robben’s converted on at least one of his two
break away opportunities.
However it must noted that Spain did beat the best playing
teams in the tournament in Germany, and their ball possession
game was unmatched.
While Netherlands had the right tactical game plan, they were
a little erratic in the implementation. Spain forced the Dutch
into unnecessary yellow cards which was detrimental as the
game progressed into overtime.
Referee Webb handed out 15 yellow cards with Netherlands
acknowledging eight and the eventual red card. With the win,
Spain became the first team to have lost its opening match and
won a World Cup. Spain became the first European nation to
win a FIFA World Cup outside its continent and the first team
to win a World Cup with only six goals scored. That’s say a lot
about their superior ball possession game which ultimately
helps their team defense.
