Page Background

• Phase II randomized study: 92 patients with localized prostate cancer

STUDY

ARMS

protons at 66 Gy in 20 fractions

carbon ions at 66 Gy in 20 fractions

• CTV (prostate and the inferior 2/3 of seminal vesicles plus a margin of 2 mm

• PTV : CTV plus 7 mm in lateral direction (beam direction) and 5 mm anterior-posterior

and inferior-superior direction

Therapeutic results

Acute Toxicity and Quality of Life in Patients

With Prostate Cancer Treated With Protons or

Carbon Ions in a Prospective Randomized Phase

II Study - The IPI Trial

Hypofractionation using either carbon ions or protons results in comparable acute

toxicities and QoL parameters (wih carbon ions was lower but not statistically

significant).

Of note, due to the occurrence of gel in the rectal wall and the consecutive occurrence

of 2 rectal fistulas, the authors stopped using the insertion of spacer gel.
