17. With the patient’s eyes still closed, place a familiar object,
such as a key, in their hand and ask them to identify the
object. Repeat using another object for the other hand.
18. Perform the Romberg test: ask the patient to stand
straight with their feet together, both eyes closed and
their arms at their sides. Wait 20 seconds and observe
for swaying and ability to maintain balance. Be alert to
prevent a fall or an injury if the patient loses their balance
during this assessment.
19. Assist the patient into a position of comfort.
20. Remove used PPE/equipment and dispose of them in the
appropriate receptacle.
21. Perform hand hygiene.
22. Document your assessment findings on the patient’s chart
and make any necessary referrals. Report any abnormal
results to a senior nurse, medical officer or endorsed
nurse practitioner immediately.
