15. Palpate the pulse points (use an ultrasound Doppler, if
required) and for skin temperature and texture at the
posterior tibial, dorsalis pedis and popliteal areas.
16. Test for pitting oedema in the pretibial area by pressing
your fingers into the skin. If an indentation remains in
the skin after your fingers have been removed, pitting
oedema is present.
17. Assist the patient into a position of comfort.
18. Remove used PPE/equipment and dispose of them in the
appropriate receptacle.
19. Perform hand hygiene.
20. Document your assessment findings on the patient’s chart
and make any necessary referrals. Report any abnormal
results to a senior nurse, medical officer or endorsed
nurse practitioner immediately.
