ASSESSMENT IN THE IB MIDDLE YEARS PROGRAMME

Assessment in the IBMYP is criterion-referenced which means that teachers, measure student

attainment against specific criteria rather than against other individuals in the class.

The objectives to be assessed in any task are made explicit to the students in the class at the time that

the task is set.

Feedback on assessment is made available to students either at the time of the assessment, or as soon

as possible afterwards.

Assessment task fit into one of two categories, formative or summative.

There is no external examination in the IBMYP; the teachers at Somerset College carry out all

assessment of student work. The assessment standards set by Somerset teachers are checked by both

internal standardization and external monitoring. External monitoring of Somerset’s assessment of

student work is carried out by the International Baccalaureate Organization. Somerset College does

conduct formal assessment including examinations and class tests as outlined in the year level

assessment guides.

The pages which follow are the generic MYP criteria for each subject in Year 9 and 10. For each

assessment task these generic criteria will be used to generate task specific criteria sheets. A task specific

criteria sheet will explicitly outline for students what is required when they are completing an assessment

task. When an assessment task is given to students the accompanying task specific criteria sheets will be

explained to students and subsequently used for grading the student work.
