DIRECT COLLAPSE

A remote galaxy called CR7 (illustrated) might

harbor a type of black hole that arises directly

from a massive cloud of gas rather than forming

after the death of a star. This rare specimen

could explain how some galaxies built

gargantuan black holes in the first billion

years or so after the Big Bang.

“The Society’s funding of the pilot episode of

Ozone Park

,

much like the theme of the show itself, helps transform

our frame of reference — specifically by expanding our

nonprofit’s work to include motivating the public to

engage candidates for public office on key science and

technology policy issues.”
