Measurement of large
dimensions
LIMAB,establishedin1979,isaspecialist
in non-contact laser measurement, with
sensor development, SW engineering,
design and manufacturing all performed
in-house. The company has developed
several
innovative
measurement
solutions for the steel industry, such as
diameter, shape, length, straightness,
thickness and width measurements.
Steady market growth and increased
demand for better process control and
quality requirement from end users
prompted LIMAB to find more adapted
facilities for both development and
production. A move to new premises
enabled the assembly of a number
of measurement systems for large
dimensions that previously would not
have been possible. The company
foresees a growth in the market for
measurement systems for large tubes
and pipes.
LIMAB has measurement systems
for billets, tubes and pipes. TubeProfiler
and HotProfiler measure the dimension
and shape with a high accuracy on
round, square and rectangular material.
The company also has a system for
thickness and width measurement of
plates and coils – ThicknessProfiler.
The latest innovation, TubeProfiler
S, has an extended gauge that allows
measurement of the total and end
straightness of pipes, in addition to the
regular measurements, in a compact
frame.
The LIMAB gauges are
non-contact in-line laser
measuring systems for
hot and cold applications
in all types of production
methods in tube mills, such
as welded tubes, UOE
and seamless tubes. The
systems can be equipped
with a flexible number of
sensors placed in a rotating
or
fixed
measurement
frame, depending on the
measurement needs.
The
LIMAB
software
displays real-time values
and trend graphs in 2D and 3D for
easy viewing. The database provides a
source of production data for long-term
monitoring, process improvements and
quality certificates.
The system comprises information
from over 70 different parameters,
such as OD, ovality, shape, length and
straightness, with alarm signals in the
case of exceeded tolerance or warning
limits.
The TubeProfiler and the HotProfiler
are easy to install in existing production
lines, and easy to relocate to other parts
of the mill, using the built-in lifting hooks
and the quick-change air and electrical
connectors.

Ready for mandatory CE marking
STEEL bending company Barnshaws
Metal Bending announced that it was
fully ready for the 1
st
July introduction of
mandatory CE marking for all fabricated
structural steelwork.
Barnshaws claims to be the first
metal bending company in the UK
to have achieved total compliance
with EN1090-1; Requirements for
conformity assessment of structural
components, covering the supply of
curved components to Execution Class
4 (Exc4).
Successfully assessed by Lloyd’s
Register LRQA, Barnshaws is able to
assure customers that it has systems in
place to ensure that all materials used
in manufacture are correct for purpose,
with a traceable audit path, and that
the Barnshaws product in question is
fully compliant with its expected end
use.
The CE mark also confirms the
competence, knowledge and skills
of manufacturing staff and that
manufacturing equipment is properly
maintained and calibrated (where
necessary).
Barnshaws invested a six-figure sum
to achieve accreditation. Particular
emphasis was placed on both tensile
and yield strength of products in the
performance assessment of every
aspect of the product range, using
hundreds of samples fabricated to a
variety of different radii.
The company has involved its entire
supply chain in the CE marking process,
to ensure that all product components
acquired from third parties are in full
compliance in terms of measurement
and performance.
Each of the company’s five UK
operations was audited by Lloyd’s
Register during the accreditation
process.
