CHOOSING
THE PERFECT FLOODLIGHT OR SECURITY LIGHT
WHEN
deciding between a floodlight and a security light consider the
following:
Purpose of the light
Security:
Sensor security lighting is an ideal lighting solution for
driveways, back gates and garages, lighting up when someone is in
the vicinity. Standard settings typically ensure that only people will
be detected and pets will not trigger the light unnecessarily. The
effectiveness of this lighting option is the element of surprise –
alerting property owners of an intruder on the property and warning
potential intruders.
Safety:
Floodlights with a day/night sensor will be activated at night
by the motion sensor to illuminate walkways when guests arrive or
leave. The floodlights are also useful in construction sites, storage yards,
and open spaces on farms or reserves. They ensure the area is safe by
lighting up when someone drives or walks past the sensor at night.
Aesthetic:
Floodlights are most often used for illuminating and
bringing out the beauty of outdoor entertainment areas with garden
features. The floodlights are usually only on for a few hours at night
and, when equipped with a timer, will automatically turn on and off
at set times. A range of colours is available. Warm white is a more
familiar colour, whilst cool white provides a brighter light for a stark
modern look. Green is commonly used by landscapers to bring out
the beauty of a garden.
Size of area
Small:
A lower wattage floodlight (10 - 20 W for LED or under 85 W
for CFL) should provide adequate lumens in small areas of illumination.
Large:
Ahigher wattage floodlight (20 - 145Wfor LEDor 150 - 1500W
for halogen) would likely be needed for large areas of illumination. High
Intensity Discharge (HID) floodlights are also useful in spacious areas and
are available in options ranging from 35 W to 400 W.
Use in coastal areas
When using floodlights at the coast, aluminium-coated fittings or low
heat CFL floodlights are recommended to avoid rust, degradation and
damage from the sea air. IP rating denotes a fitting’s resistance to mois-
ture and foreign objects. The higher the rating, the higher the resistance.
Traffic volume
Low traffic residential areas should consider security lighting with PIR
(Passive Infrared) motion sensors that turn on the lights automatically
when people are nearby.
High traffic commercial properties such as
restaurants and malls or residential homes can
use all night flood lights. These lights will also
assist security guards and residents to ensure the
property is well lit and safe.
Cost and energy efficiency
It is important to choose energy efficient lighting
if the light will be on all night. LED is currently the
most energy efficient light source and also has the
best life expectancy. A 20 W LED floodlight is 7.5
times more efficient than a 150 W linear halogen
lamp and lasts 15 times longer. The only consider-
ation is that the lamp’s upfront cost is higher than
that of other light sources.

LAUNCHES
HIGH POWER
LED FLOODLIGHT
SERIES
MAJOR TECH
has introduced its innovative,
slimline HLF LED floodlight series. “LED floodlight
solutions have become very popular in industrial
and commercial holdings, and more so with
safety and security playing a vital part in decision
making,” says Rhodam Evans, Major Tech’s
lighting specialist. Commercial and industrial
floodlights are designed to provide bright, even
lighting across widespread areas with ease. The
HLF series, which is suitable for warehousing,
agricultural holdings, parking lots and sports
grounds, brings any exterior to life. The high
quality, inexpensive, value-for-money high power
floodlights have several benefits compared to
halogen or standard incandescent options.
Evans, explains that the HLF Series is available
in 500 W (>34 000 lumen), 300 W (>23 000),
200 W (>14 000 lumen) and 100 W (>8000
lumen) versions and includes the new 170°
rotation feature, which makes the floodlight easy
to install and, since it is no longer restricted to
a wall mounting, allows the light to be aimed in
any direction. “The premium quality aluminium
body which is corrosion resistant makes it easy to
maintain and clean” says Rhodam.
Features:
• 170° Rotation
• Slimline housing with modern design
• Outstanding corrosion resistance
• SMD LED
• High-quality IP65 cable connection
• 120° beam angle
• 6000 K – 6500 K cool white
The HLF LED floodlight series is; energy efficient,
inexpensive and provides value for money owing
to its low maintenance. It is also environmentally
friendly, with a long life span of 30 000 to 50 000
hours and offers bright even light.
