The Future
Through its collective efforts to turn environmental
vision into action, establish a robust institutional
context for action, and a proactive perspective in
accounting for Blue Carbon’s potential, Abu Dhabi
has already taken important steps in recognising and
promoting the importance of Blue Carbon ecosystems
locally and internationally. With the development of
a Blue Carbon policy, Abu Dhabi is poised to build
on these efforts and assuming a leading role in the
international Blue Carbon-related efforts.
Abu Dhabi already stands much to gain from the
Blue Carbon Demonstration Project, as it has shed
light on ongoing efforts to recognize, capture, and
safeguard important values being provided by
this rich mosaic of coastal ecosystems. The world
stands much to gain as well, as Abu Dhabi provides
leadership in this cutting edge and important field.
Abu Dhabi faces an exciting future. With good
information about natural capital and the benefits
it provides, and with an improved understanding of
how these ecosystems function, the Emirate will be
able to anticipate and accommodate change, and
grow more sustainably. Blue Carbon ecosystems
will be a crucial component of that growth.
