Sweet Darusya
master of all trades, but also
a bit of an oddball: he loved
to do everything in a way
that neither the locals nor
people anywhere else would
ever do. And they also say,
he brought with him from
the outside world a young
German woman with weak
lungs, so she had to walk
above the water during the
day in order to breathe in
the moisture from the river
as much as possible. The
wife categorically refused to
travel without her husband to
warm waters for treatment.
And so that it would be more
cheerful for her to walk above
the Cheremosh, that master
thought up a small trick –
he ordered the building of
an arched dam, so that it
seemed for his good Mrs. as
if she were climbing up at
first, like in the Alps, and then
going down, up – down: this
way, you see, the day passes
more quickly, and it seems
that you’re wandering along
other – distant lands.
Thus, from that time you
could not only walk, but also
even run along the wide crest
of the dam.
But if you stand on this –
highest –place and suddenly
look down at the river, then
your head can start spinning,
at least anyone’s head that’s
not very healthy. And if you
simply look this way – for
the sake of interest, then
below, right under the water
one can see those kinds of
shoreline bushes and stones
like the ones here from
above. Children would play
and run downward along the
dam, like tiny little suns after
a rain along a rainbow, and
then for entire days splash in
the water. But their parents
prefer to give their children
