Yuri Vynnychuk

police – so, was her fiancé a

Pole? Was he wounded, then

fled and hid out at Lucia’s?

Maybe after that he changed

into civilian clothing... What

happened to him after that?

For several days he was

involved in clearing out

his living space, burning

some things and throwing

out others, though not

immediately, as some things

he found required closer

attention, like a box of old

watches, alarm clocks and

clocks, which grandfather

had tried to fix. All these

dead mechanisms from Lord

know what times evinced

wonder in Yarosh, so he

tossed out only a part of

them in the trash, and placed

several of the old timepieces

on shelves. His auntie, who

fortunately survived more

than one war and more than

one misfortune, remained

true to herself even in

peacetime, with her reserves

of cereals, sugar, salt, flour,

soap, matches, and various

homemade preserves, one

could manage there for many

years. Inthepantrytheshelves

were adorned with many

jars: preserves, obligatorily

including rose petal jam; they

were lined up according to

the degree of ripeness of the

fruit and vegetables, but they

weren’t sealed with metal

tops, but rather with a special

glass paper, which, after

moistening, auntie applied

to each jar, after which it

hardened and created a

tight cover; in the pantry

itself she also placed a small

circle of glass paper, soaked

in alcohol, so it wouldn’t

grow moldy; candied fruit

– boiled in sugary syrup,

orange, lemon and tangerine

skins, and additionally –

paradise apples and quince;

dried mushrooms, apples,

plums, and pears; jars with

marinades – mushrooms,

plums, gherkins, and pickles.
