A Tale of Two
Campaigns
T
he British launched two major campaigns in 1777. One aimed
to take control of New York’s Hudson River valley. The other
targeted Philadelphia, the political capital and largest city in the
rebellious United States.
(Above) British General John Burgoyne surrenders his sword, and his army, to Horatio Gates
after the Battle of Saratoga in October 1777. The American victory at Saratoga encouraged
France and other European countries to provide military supplies and troops to help the colonists.
