I

t is a truth

universally

acknowledged that

King Gizzard & the

Lizard Wizard put on a

stunning live show, but

there can’t be many

more spectacular

ways to experience

the seven-piece than

at Melbourne’s Night

Cat. “They’ve got that

360-degree stage – it

was the first gig I’ve

left with a ripped shirt

and broken glasses,”

says Matthew

Murana, describing

the

Nonagon Infinity

album launch in March

last year.

He’s got high

hopes for the band’s

upcoming

Murder Of The

Universe

later this month:

“I’m a huge fan of the new

tuning they’ve gone to,” he

says. “[They’ve taken] it back

to their roots, their jazzier and

bluesier style, but still kept it

very psychedelic, as they always

do. When King Gizz release an

year’s Falls Festival, along with

Childish Gambino and DMA’s),

Murana spent time prior to his

two-year tenure at Airport West

JB as a mastering and

recording engineer,

working with Violent

Soho, Chet Faker and

Bad//Dreems.

Airport West’s music

fan demographic is

split into two loose

crowds: the older

devotees – “we sell a

lot of soundtracks, a lot

of classics; the Gary

Clark Jr album and Nick

Cave did very well, [as

did] the new Gorillaz” –

and younger kids from

the alternative scene.

“There’s a lot of musical

kids in the area,” Murana

explains. “Heavy

metal kids, who go to

[Melbourne indie/punk/

metal venues] BANG

and NEXT – they pick up

all the latest hardcore and punk

releases.”

Next up on Matthew’s live

calendar? “R.L Grime,” he

says without hestitation. (The

American hip hop producer is

playing Festival Hall on July 29.)

“I’m ready to lose my mind at

that gig.”

album, the whole thing is solid

front to back; the tracklist is

tasteful. When they put a show

together it’s the same thing – it’s

always well-thought-out and very

jammy, no awkward silences.”

Also citing Run The Jewels and

London Grammar as favourites

(the latter of which he saw at this
