I
t’s pretty ideal when a
particularly excellent album
becomes subconsciously married
to an especially sunny period
of your life. For Jacob Murphy,
his European trip last year is
unshakeably nailed to Jordan
Rakei’s
Cloak
. “His voice is like
butter – if you could synthesise
a voice to butter, it’s probably
the closest thing you
could get,” he says of
the Brisbane-born, UK-
based musician. “And
the instrumentation…
the instruments are all
live, but my God, it’s
one of the cleanest
records I’ve ever heard.
It became my soundtrack
to travelling; there’re
all these sentimental
connotations I have
to that record. It’s just
beautiful, magical.” Rakei
lent those caramel vocals
to Disclosure’s last
record, and has swapped
favours with Melbourne
rapper Remi (another of
Murphy’s favourites).
A drummer and producer
something Murphy describes
as “a milestone.” A long-time
fan of J Dilla and D’Angelo, he
recently faced “the most intense
musical experience of [his] life” at
Melbourne CBD’s Golden Monkey,
a live venue he often attends for
their neo-soul/jazz house band and
hip hop performers. “Last year
I saw D’Angelo’s band play a gig
after they’d played at the Palace
[in St Kilda],” he explains. “It was
intimate; they were improvising,
just playing random stuff – it was
crazy.”
Amongst his prized Childish
Gambino, Rakei and Flying
Lotus LPs, Murphy’s pick
of his own vinyl crop is
Gary Clark Jr’s
Live
of 2014.
“Blues and rock, jazzy
moments… there were
so many dynamics on that
record, it was so raw and
intense, and it was captured
so well live – there were no
overdubs,” he says. “The
new one [last month’s
Live:
North America
] is the same,
but the first one stole my
heart. I play it every day at
work. I almost want to send
Gary an email and say ‘Hey
man, I just wanna let you
know, every week when
I play you, someone buys
your CD.’”
himself, Murphy’s love for creating
“laid back and wonky” beats is
supplemented by his appreciation
for jazz, soul and funk, (see:
soundcloud.com/lndnbeats). His
J Dilla and Flying Lotus-inspired
drum loops and samples were
recently sought out by a UK
company which offers top quality
sample packs to producers,
