10 Region Hit the

Target Too...

Twenty IPA members and friends, including

guests from 9 Region, arrived on a balmy

‘Indian Summer’ day at Purleigh near

Chelmsford Essex for the 2014 Clay Pigeon

Shooting Tournament.

The prize - the Dave Ross

Trophy.

Fifteen shooters, including many new faces,

enjoyed great weather, atmosphere and

friendship as this now established event

took place.

This year saw first time shooter Kiran Gharial,

from 9 Region, excel himself and he obviously

has a natural talent - or is it that he has had too

much practice with his speed gun? He attended

with his wife Jags and their two young sons. Jags

had shot before but many years ago, however,

she soon got into the swing of things.

This year saw ties for first and second place -

which is unprecedented. Shoot-offs are planned

next year to avoid doubling up on trophies.

The winners of the Dave Ross Trophy 2014 was

new attendees Dave Clark and Kevin Mothersill

of Chelmsford police.

The runner-ups were Kiran

Gharial and long time 10

Region member Phil Matthews

with ‘IPA friend’ Andrea

Griffiths sweeping up at the

rear with the

‘booby prize’.

The winners

were presented

with their

prizes by the

event proprietor

Graham Ferris.

Next year’s event

has already been

booked to take

place on Sunday

27 September at

midday. The price

is remaining the same representing excellent

value – especially to 10 Region members who

are entitled to a £5 reduction - meaning their

rate remains at £35. For all others the price will

be £40 for 50 shots plus food and drink.

Next year’s competition will see the

introduction of a new trophy for the

best female shooter.

Please make a note in your diary!

Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire branches joined forces

to invite prospective members to Kibworth Shooting Ground,

Leicestershire, to experience a variety of Clay Pigeon

shooting disciplines.

Everyone was thoroughly briefed on safety procedures by Clive

Wood, Chair of Leicestershire branch. Clive also took the time

to coach the novices in the finer art of holding a shotgun, the

right way up, loading the cartridges safely and extracting spent

shell cases.

The group experienced different disciplines including 'down

the line', ‘sporting’ and ‘skeet’ where targets are thrown in a

great variety of trajectories, angles, speeds, elevations and

distances.

The disciplines were

originally devised to

simulate live quarry

shooting, hence

some of the names

commonly used in

‘sporting’ stands:

springing teal, driven

pheasant, bolting

rabbit, crossing pigeon

and dropping duck.

Despite the weather

closing in with rain and

wind during the afternoon

session, everyone thoroughly

enjoyed improving their shooting. In fact,

Neil Strauhan joined the IPA soon after and

attended his first branch meeting

in November.
