T

he R700 million Marikana Ex-

tension 2 residential project

will yield an impressive 2 600

units on completion.

This includes government fully

subsidised units, Finance Linked In-

dividual Subsidy Programme (FLISP)

partially subsidised housing and fully

bonded units. Contractors Malome

Business Enterprise, Andisa Road and

General Construction and Motheo

Construction Group will roll out a

range of housing typologies.

Malome Business Enterprise built

292 units using 1,1 million Corobrik

CoroJemclass bricks from its Rietvlei

factory. Each 45 m² unit consists of

two bedrooms, bathroom, lounge

and kitchen.

A further 252 Community Residen-

tial Units (CRUs) – one

and two bedroom

apartments – were

constructed by the

North West pre-

mier, Supra Mahu-

mapelo, handed over

some of the complet-

ed houses to ben-

eficiaries earlier this

year.

“Face brick is re-

ally the perfect ma-

terial for any govern-

ment infrastructure

project,” said Musa

the local mining community in the North West Province.

R700 m Marikana housing project

Shangase, Commercial Director for

Corobrik. “We are always delighted to

support government initiatives such

as these, providing excellent housing

for worthwhile beneficiaries.”

Apart from the durability, strength

and quality of Corokbrik’s face brick

range, Shangase says, “Face brick

offers the lowest lifecycle cost as no

further maintenance, nor plastering

or painting is required once the bricks

are laid. Brick wall construction also

provides better acoustics and supe-

rior thermal comfort, negating the

need for artificial heating and cooling,

which also reduces costs.”

Further to this, correctly laid brick-

work has minimal cavities, making

the structures impervious to vermin

infestation.

Face brick’s ability to absorbwater

slowly and then release it through

evaporation prevents moisture build

up thereby ensuring a healthy living

environment. “The aesthetic quality

of face brick immediately creates a

welcoming structure, which is evi-

dent in every unit constructed at the

Marikana housing project,” concludes

Shangase.
