BRIGHT
SPARK
GOING UP
Mary lived on the 16
th
floor of a tower block. Every
weekday she took the lift to the ground floor and
caught the bus. However, on her return she almost al-
ways got the lift to the 5th floor only, and then walked
up to the 16
th
floor.
Mary doesn't know anyone on the 5th floor and there
is nothing there that she needs use of. Explain, please!

FEBRUARY SOLUTION
A MYSTIC SQUARE
Jane's description was indeed fanciful. Each symbol is
simply one of the numbers from 1 to 9 together with its
reflection in a vertical mirror. The numbers read from
1 to 8 across the rows from top to bottom, so the miss-
ing 'symbol' is a pair of 9s, face to face.
