Weld purge oxygen monitors
To complement its range of pipe
purging systems, Prestige Industrial
Pipework Equipment (PIPE) Ltd has a
comprehensive range of weld purge
oxygen monitors to suit all exotic high
purity pipe welding applications.
The Handy Purge 100 entry-level model
is a suitable tool for the welder’s toolbox.
This unit measures levels of resting
oxygen down to as low as 0.01% (100
parts per million), making it suitable
for the majority of high purity welding
applications. The Handy Purge 100 is
a battery-powered unit, and uses a
replaceable sensor, guaranteed for 12
months, with an average life span of two
to three years.
The Handy Purge 100 Plus, also battery-
powered, is designed to accurately
measure oxygen levels down to 100
ppm, and features an integral pump
for constant readings with no operator
intervention.
An internal moisture trap and line filter
protect the oxygen sensor from potential
contaminants. The flagship handheld
purge monitor from PIPE is the Handy
Purge Pro 5, designed to meet the
stringent requirements of titanium
welding, where even the slightest
amount of oxidation is unacceptable.
The Handy Purge Pro 5 reads oxygen
levels down to 0.0005% (5 parts per
million), something that the company
claims no other handheld oxygen
monitor is currently capable of.
Powered by built-in rechargeable
batteries, the Handy Purge Pro 5
features easy-to-use software
and a colour screen. It can be
connected to a phone or PC
and printer via Bluetooth or
cable (RS232 interface) to log
and store data continuously, if
required.
For measuring oxygen
down to the lowest levels
for the most critical welding
applications, PIPE Ltd offers
the Pro Purge 1. Capable
of measuring oxygen levels
down to 0.00005% (0.5
parts per million), it allows
the welder to achieve perfect, oxide-free
welds. As with the Handy Purge Pro
5, the Pro Purge 1 is connectable via
cable or Bluetooth to enable continuous
logging of data. With a 100m Bluetooth
range, the Pro Purge 1 can also be
controlled remotely via a mobile phone.

Specifying tubular lining material
for HPHT environments
Oilfield product specifiers have
recently been pushing the limits of
conventional materials to meet the
technical challenges posed by high
pressure, high temperature (HPHT)
environments. Despite that fact,
because applied materials will remain in
HPHT well service for years during a full
production cycle, many engineers have
discovered that products remain at risk
of earlier failure due to extremely harsh
conditions. Consequently, specifiers
of products for HPHT may practice a
higher-than-normal level of knowledge-
based decision-making to avoid the
high cost consequences of failure.
As HPHT activity continues to grow
and well conditions become more
severe, more advanced materials are
required. Some manufacturers have
taken necessary steps to invest in
new material development specifically
designed to meet the demands of HPHT
environments.
When presented with a new materials
option, specifiers may be diligent in
investigating the performance history
of the potential supplier’s other product
lines. Searching company websites can
be one place to start the investigation.
Case studies can provide valuable
proof through performance. Although
the demands of an HPHT environment
present unique challenges for applied
materials, successful performance of
a supplier in addressing the needs
of other oilfield environments may
recommend their validity with regard to
new products. An example of product
performance proof as provided through
actual well production usage can be
viewed at
, which
documents the successful use of
Duoline
®
liners in well service over the
span of decades. Specifiers can also
learn how the supplier has capitalised
on past experience to produce new
materials. For instance, since 1964
more than 100 million feet of Duoline 20
glass reinforced epoxy tubular liners for
conventional wells have been installed
worldwide.
Duoline Technologies took its experience
of meeting the needs of conventional
wells and incorporated manufacturing
techniques into the development and
production of D-350 liners specifically
designed and manufactured for the
HPHT environment. Duoline D-350 now
provides reliable corrosion protection
of steel tubulars with temperature
resistance up to 177°C (350°F).
