satisfying about taking
on the Third Reich in a
video game – we can’t get
enough of it.
While we’re not RTS players,
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War III
has been
getting positive press, with the return of base
building exciting our freelancer Mark Ankucic to
uncomfortable levels of acceptance.
Our final appointment for E3 2016 was with
Nintendo, and the Japanese gaming giant is
understandably remaining tight-lipped about its
NX console due in March next year. But, they
did have
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the
Wild,
purportedly creating the longest queues
in E3 history to play a game.
The art style is beautiful and the open-world
section of the game we played is apparently
only one per cent of the entire gameworld.
There are a lot of new features here, ranging
from the way that Link travels to his ability to
climb, the puzzles in the game, and the large
range of weapons available. Releasing on both
Wii U and NX in March 2017,
Breath of the Wild
is going to be massive.
And that was it. The freneticism of E3
was over for another year. Overall it was a
successful show, delivering on promises and
even throwing up a few surprises. We’ll watch
on with interest to see how the ESA plans for
E3 2017, and whether it opens the show up to a
bigger audience.
A simple solution would be to open the
doors to the general public on the Friday and
Saturday following the industry event, or divide
the show between media and consumers the
same way Gamescom does.
In our opinion, E3 is still a vitally important
date on the annual gaming calendar. It’s the
first opportunity for many studios to gauge
opinion and gather feedback on their games,
and the perfect platform to roll out the
gaming calendar for the year ahead. It
reveals strategies and trends, but more
importantly it generates hope, anticipation
and excitement for us, the gamers.
