Virginia’s low-cost workers’ compensation system
is known to create economic advantages
in promoting business and job growth. An important long-standing characteristic of Virginia’s
workers’ compensation system is its leadership in low cost.
A leading national comparison of workers’ compensation systems is the Oregon Workers’ Compensation
Premium Rate Ranking Study. This study has been completed in even-numbered years since 1986.
In 2016, Virginia was ranked 47 out of 51 jurisdictions in terms of premium rate ranking. Virginia
employers in the voluntary market pay, on average, $1.24 per $100 of employee payroll, or 67% below
the median state rate.
