Sophie Koh,
Book Of Songs
Sophie Koh – who came to Melbourne via New Zealand and
Singapore – had one rule when she started her fourth album:
“No drums, no bass!” she told producer J Walker. Indeed, the
record features just piano, cello, viola and vocals. It’s Koh’s brand
of classical pop, marrying her classical upbringing with her Asian
heritage. “So it feels like summer days are over,” the album starts,
which is apt because this could be viewed as a winter record. It’s
delightfully dark, with haunting instrumentation. Like a gripping
novel,
Book Of Songs
slowly draws you in, and it shows that Koh
has a bright future as a composer.
Book Of Songs
is out now via MGM.
