THE ROAD CARS

The top-of-the-line 512BBi design, by 1984,was getting a tad long in

the tooth, but its replacement brought Ferrari back to the forefront in

supercar design.TheTestarossawas a singularly strikingmachinewhose

most distinguishing characteristicwas distinctive slats leading intohuge

air intakes in front of each rearwheel, where a pair of radiators resided.

Better cooling resulted, as did increased luggage space. The enginewas a

4.9-liter enlargement of thatwhichhad resided in theBBi,now boasting

four valves per cylinder. This kept output at 380horsepowerwhilehelping

fuel consumption figures, a sign that evenMaranellowasnot immune to

planetary realities.

A newGTO also bowed in 1984.The 288GTO, outwardly similar to the

308GTB, had a 2.8-literV-8with twin turbochargers, good for 400 horse-

power and a top speed of 198m.p.h.Performancewas helped by the use

of exotic, lightweightmaterials such as carbon-fiber andKevlar in the

car’s various body panels. The 308GTB itself had its engine displacement

increased to 3.2 liters in 1985, bringing horsepower up to 270 alongwith its

new 328GTB designation; themid-1980s also saw a cabriolet version intro-

duced for theMondial, a variant thatmany felt helped the car’s basically

controversial looks.

The fortieth anniversary of the first Ferrari road carwas fast approach-

ing, and the increasingly frailEnzo Ferrari told his board that hewanted

the company to commemorate the occasion by producing the fastest road-

going Ferrari ever. What bowed in 1987was nothingmore than an out-

and-out racing sports carwith a few token detailsmaking it legal for street

use—itwas the F40.

Performance of the

288GTOwas enhanced

by the use of exotic

materials such as

carbon fiberandKevlar

in its various bodypanels.

Over the years, simple,

round tail lights, such

as those found on this

288GTO, have become a

Ferrari stylistic trademark.
