The Spanish colonists first founded the city. However, it became of great importance after the
Mexican Independence due to its balanced ties and convenient location for international trade and
relations.
Monterrey has the highest GDP per capita of any city in México. It is home to hundreds of
transnational companies. Therefore, the city plays an important role in the steel, cement, glass,
and brewery sectors. Due to its proximity with the United States, it is also a major player in the
auto-parts industry.
