The toast of " Our Guests " was proposed by
Mr. James R. Quirke. An Taoiseach, Mr. John A.
Costello, S.C., Mr. Samuel Gumming, President,
Incorporated Law Society of Northern Ireland, and
Mr. S. V. Kirkpatrick replied to the toast.
The toast of " the Society " was proposed by the
Minister for Justice and the President replied.
During the evening orchestral items were given
by Messrs. Reidy, Kelly and Davis and vocal items
by Messrs. Tadhg MacFirbishigh, S.C., Joseph
Flood and Sam Mooney.
SOLICITORS' GOLFING SOCIETY
THE Spring meeting of the Society was held at
Baltray on Saturday, ist May, when, in spite of a
downpour during the morning, there were 5 8 entries.
The afternoon turned out fine and all the com
petitions were played off.
The Society's Challenge Cup and the Captain's
Pri2e were won by Kevin Burke with a score of 71.
The runner-up was Jack Bolton with 72.
The
Veterans' Cup and Society's Prize were won by
R. E. Felton—for the second year in succession.
The St. Patrick's Plate was won by D. Lynch. The
prize for the best gross was won by H. B. Lenihan
with 83. The best first nine holes was won by D.
O'Hagan and the best second nine by B. Doyle.
The Dinner at the club house was presided over
by the Captain, Dermot Shaw. The guests were
District Justice Kenny and the Captain and Hon.
Secretary of Baltray. The Toast of " The Captain "
was proposed by P. Glynn, who referred to his long
association with the Shaw family and to the hard
work which the Captain had always given to the
Society as a member of the Committee. In replying
the Captain said he appreciated the honour the
Society had conferred on the country members of
the Society in electing one of them its Captain.
He appealed for an increased membership of the
Society and for more frequent visits to the country
on the part of the Society.
The toast of" The Guests " was proposed by J.
Barrett, who, in his own inimitable style, kept the
company laughing. This was
responded to by
District Justice Kenny.
The toast of " Baltray Golf Club " was proposed
by T. A. O'Reilly, who thanked the officers and staff
for the excellent arrangements which had been made
and the reception the Society had received. He
congratulated the Club on the recent achievement
of two of its lady associates and on the improvements
which had been made to the course and premises.
Entertainment was provided by Mr. Clifford
Bradshaw with Mr. Rich at the piano and by Mr.
Chancy, Conjurer, who were much appreciated.
HOUSING
(AMENDMENT) ACT,
1948.
THE attention of solicitors is called to Sections 7-15
of the above Statute, which contain provisions which
may require consideration by solicitors advising
vendors and purchasers of house property.
By
Section
2.
the expression " habitable house " means
a house situate in the functional area of a housing
authority which, in the opinion of such authority,
is reasonably fit for human habitation or is reasonably
capable of being rendered so fit.
The joint effect of Sections 7 and 8 of the Act is
to prevent any person from demolishing in whole
or in part or using otherwise than as a dwelling-
house any habitable house, without the permission
of the housing authority in whose functional area
the house is situated. An appeal from refusal of this
permission lies to the Minister for Local Govern
ment.
Section u, which will come into operation on
ist July, 1948, prohibits any person from permitting
premises to be used as a multiple dwelling without
permission in writing of the housing authority in
whose functional area the premises are situated..
Such permission shall not be unreasonably withheld
and an appeal from the refusal of permission lies
to the Circuit Court within one month after receiving
notice of such refusal.
Solicitors acting for pur
chasers of premises who intend to use them either
as business premises or for letting purposes would
need to consider carefully the effect of Part II of the
Act.
