The Council passed in silence a vote of sympathy

with the relatives of the late Mr. Eugene Collins.

Applications under Section 18

THE Council considered reports from the Court

of Examiners on applications under Section 18 by

two intending apprentices for total exemption from

the Society's Preliminary Examination.

On the

recommendation of the Court of Examiners, it was

decided not to oppose the granting of the application

by the Chief Justice.

Application under Section 25

THE Council considered an affidavit by a solicitor's

apprentice who

is applying for admission as a

solicitor, grounding an application to the Chief

Justice to sanction his having engaged in an employ–

ment other than that of a solicitor's apprentice

during the period of his indentures. On the report

of the Court of Examiners, it was decided not to

oppose the application.

Terms of appointment of solicitors to local

authorities

A deputation was appointed to interview the Minister

for Local Government, to put forward the view o

the Council on the terms of appointment of solicitors

to local authorities ;

the Minister having already

agreed to receive a deputation.

Unguaranteed cheques on closing sales

THE Council decided, on a report from a Committee,

to publish a strong recommendation to the pro–

fession against the practice in so far as it exists of

offering unguaranteed cheques in exchange for the

title deeds on completion of sales. A note on the

subject is published in this issue.
