Tenimenti Luigi d’Alessandro

The d’Alessandro family moved to Cortona from Rome in 1968. 20 years later the family’s wine estate,

Tenimenti d’Alessandro, began experiments on 5 hectares of land planted by leading Italian agronomist,

Professor Attilio Scienza. Proessor Scienza spent the next four years conducting tests on each plot within

those 5 hectares until he determined that Syrah was the variety best suited to the soils in this location.

This marked a turning point in Cortona’s winemaking history as the small hilltop town in eastern Tuscany

had, up to this point, had not been known as a quality wine-producing zone. Syrah’s affinity for Cortona’s

hot and dry climate was so profound that Tenimenti d’Alessandro gradually planted another 40 hectares

of the grape between 1993 and 2002. In that time the Syrah-based wines from Tenimenti d’Alessandro

have one praise and recognition internationally. Cortona earned DOC status in 1999, and thanks to the

collaboration between winemakers, Christine Vernay and Luca Currado, Tenimenti d’Alessandro continues

translate the best of Cortona’s terroir through the Syrah grape.

Borgo Syrah Cortona DOC

This wine was born out of a project the winery undertook restoring seven historic buildings and remodelling

them into 20 apartments. The idea was to create a “borgo,” or small village, of wine lovers, who could live

amongst the vines.

Fontarca IGT

Made from 100% Viognier grapes sourced from the Fontarca vineyard. A portion of the grapes are fermented

and aged in barrel to increase the richness of the final wine.

Il Bosco Syrah Cortona DOC

This is the wine that made Cortona famous for Syrah production. This wine is named after the winery’s oldest

vineyard, Il Bosco, although grapes are also sourced from the Cani, Pozzo Vecchio and Cipressi vineyards.

Migliara Syrah Cortona DOC

Migliara is made from 100% estate grown Syrah sourced from a single vineyard. It is the result of years of

research in zoning and clonal selection, delivering the best expression of Cortona.
