Strong and easy-to-install
large diameter pipe
An innovative type of large diameter
pipe is helping communities with a
wide range of needs. Storm water
management, culvert repair, sanitary
sewer lines and combined sewer
overflow (CSO) projects can all benefit
from the use of SaniTite HP
®
pipe made
from polypropylene.
The engineering-grade resin provides
the pipe with the ability to withstand
harsh environments while its proprietary
design and construction provides a
high strength-to-weight ratio. SaniTite
HP pipe is a product of Advanced
Drainage Systems, Inc (ADS). For more
than 45 years ADS has been a supplier
of corrugated plastic pipe and related
products for use in the storm water
drainage and sanitary sewer markets,
and the company now has 85 locations
around the world.
Some examples of applications of ADS
products are as follows:
Storm water management: The
requirements for a large section of a
new storm water drainage system were
met with an authorised alternative to
reinforced concrete pipe. The use of the
engineered, strong and easy-to-install
pipe at the Port Columbus International
Airport reduced costs, sped installation
and increased worker safety on the
$31.4mn project. The contractor
explained that because the ADS pipes,
even the 60" diameter sections, were
easily manoeuvrable, they were able to
perform the installation quickly. One
200-ft section of 36" SaniTite HP
pipe was installed in 90 minutes.
Culvert replacement: The town of
Durham, New Hampshire, found
that sliplining with 5-ft diameter
polypropylene pipe was the solution
to a three-pronged problem being
faced when they repaired a storm
water culvert. The 99-year old
poured-in-place box culvert runs
under an active railroad track
through a brownfield site. This
required the repair to be able to seal
out any contamination from above, not
inhibit the creek’s water flow rate, and
still be able to withstand the weight of
17ft of earth and the multi-ton Amtrak
passenger and freight railcars frequently
passing overhead every day. 180ft of
60" diameter SaniTite HP triple wall
profile pipe from ADS was used.
Sanitary sewer: To prevent storm water
from infiltrating into its sewer system,
the city of Moberly, Missouri, replaced
the crumbling 80-year old brick and
mortar tunnel that was serving as a
combined storm water and sanitary
pipeline. The new system will remain
a combined sewer but, because of the
type of pipe used, seeping groundwater
will be prevented from entering the
system, which lowers the treatment
cost per gallon of effluent. The Reed
Street combined sewer overflow (CSO)
replacement project used more than
3,000ft of SaniTite HP pipe as a way
to reduce inflow and infiltration by
replacing the old brick sewer with a
larger diameter pipe.
Combined sewer overflow (CSO): In
Portland, Maine, a sewer replacement
project utilised 60" diameter, high
performance polypropylene pipe
to increase conveyance capacity,
replacing a smaller, 100-year old vitrified
clay line and separating a parallel 10ft
diameter combined sewer, which now
solely conveys storm water. The CSO
abatement project used 5,600ft of 60"
SaniTite HP pipe. The $4mn project
replaced runs of 24" and 30" diameter
pipe with a single larger diameter
pipeline to eliminate combined sewer
overflows into a nearby pond and stop
untreated wastewater from flowing into
an estuary.
“Aside from being rugged, one of the
reasons we went with the ADS pipe was
because we could set it in place simply
with our backhoes and wouldn’t need
cranes,” explained Ken Grondin of RJ
Grondin & Sons, Inc. “Plus there were
logistic issues. If we used concrete pipe
that comes just in eight-foot lengths,
we’d have nearly 200 truckloads that
we’d have to coordinate to the holding
site and then move again piece by
piece to the trench. That’s a lot of extra
handling and traffic control. So with the
20-foot lengths of the ADS pipe, instead
of the eight footers, there are essentially
three times fewer trucks required, and it
worked out pretty well.”
