Evolution from Reelex
Reelex Packaging Solutions – formerly
known as Windings Inc – is busy with
more than just a new name.
The Reelex® package, an industry
standard in the communications
cable market, is evolving to address
the needs and requirements of a
broad spectrum of products that are
traditionally packaged on reels.
The size of the products packaged in
Reelex coils now includes products
with diameters as small as 0.025" or
as large as 0.625" outside diameter.
The resulting coils range in diameter
from 1.5" to well over three feet.
Manufacturers and installers of com-
munications cable have known the
unique benefits of the Reelex package
for more than 30 years.
They rely on effortless payout, total
absence of kinks and tangles and an
economical package that is easily
disposable when empty.
By expanding the scale of coil winding
equipment, Reelex has brought these
same benefits to products that were
not previously available in Reelex
packages.
Currently in development are 16"
mandrels, capable of coiling PEX
tubing, a lightweight plastic product
that is rapidly replacing copper pipe
for domestic water supply as well as
heating applications.
Standard package lengths are 100,
300 and 500ft. These large mandrels
are also well suited for speciality
braided and rope products, as well as
fibre optic cables that have a restricted
bend radius.
A 24" mandrel version is also in the
works. This extra large diameter
mandrel is well suited for stiff product
applications larger than 0.625" outside
diameter.
On the small end of the spectrum, an
automated coiling system is nearing
completion that can wind miniature
Reelex coils and wrap them with
cellophane tape. This unit will handle
products with a diameter of 0.025" to
0.075" and produce coil diameters up
to 2.25" with a maximum depth of 1.5".
The machine is ultra compact, and
suitable for short lengths of wire or
plastic products such as art and crafts
or home and garden items. The finished
package can include a tri-fold clamshell
case, suitable for retail display.
