• Bolus is a tissue-equivalent material placed directly on the
skin
• Purpose of bolus is to increase the dose on the surface
• If bolus is used across entire field width, all isodose lines are
closer to the surface
• Counteracts the skin-sparing effect of megavoltage X-rays,
while retaining penetration
